About me
My name is Kathryn Bowman and I’m a freelance translator and proofreader based in Cornwall, England.
A creative thinker with a love for languages and a way with words, I translate from French and German into British English, my mother tongue.
I’ve lived in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, so the South West has a special place in my heart. As you’d expect, I can never say no to a cream tea!
After my A-Levels, I ventured north to study for my BA in Modern Languages and Cultures and MA in Translation Studies at Durham University. I was lucky enough to spend time living in Paris, France and both Mönchengladbach and the Black Forest in Germany during my year abroad. Here’s a photo of me on my graduation day!
I launched my career as a freelance translator and proofreader after completing my MA degree in 2021 and I’m enjoying every minute of it so far.
Wondering what I get up to on my days off?
I love exploring new places and taking photos of my adventures – as you can see from some of my favourite travel photos below! When I’m not translating, you might find me practising my Italian, planning my next trip abroad or experimenting in the kitchen. I also support Translators Without Borders as a volunteer translator and proofreader in my free time.

The story behind the name
When I started up my freelance business in 2021, I wanted to give it a unique name with a personal touch. After hours of pondering, I decided on Topaz Translation Services, inspired by my birthstone with its distinctive sparkle that reflects my high-quality language services rather perfectly. Yellow and sky blue, two of the most popular variants of topaz, quickly became my theme colours. I paired these with navy blue and white to create a striking colour scheme which is at the very heart of my branding.
